Winter Solstice: A Sacred Pause & the Promise of Returning Light
December 21 | 10:03 AM
Today marks the Winter Solstice—the longest night and darkest day of the year.
A powerful threshold. A pause point. A turning.
Gratitude to everyone who joined us for our Winter Solstice Workshop on Wednesday evening. It was such a gift to gather together in rest, reflection, deep presence, and shared stillness. These moments of intentional pause feel especially meaningful at this time of year.
The Winter Solstice has been honored across cultures for thousands of years. At Newgrange in Ireland, a 5,000-year-old monument aligned so precisely that, at sunrise on the solstice, a narrow beam of light travels through a long passageway to illuminate the inner chamber—only for a few minutes. Whoever built it knew, with certainty, that the light would return again and again.
That knowing matters.
Especially on the darkest day.
Around the world, monuments, fires, the Yule log, and long-held traditions tell a shared story: remember the light. This is the balance of yin and yang—light and dark, rest and movement, stillness and action. Winter invites us not to reject the darkness, but to honor it. Darkness has a role. It is not a failure or an ending—it is a necessary phase.
And yet, so often we resist winter. We push against it. Society tells us to keep producing, moving, doing—no matter the season. But nature tells a different story.
Winter calls us to slow down.
To rest.
To listen.
We all move through seasons, rhythms, and cycles in our lives. Winter is the season of receiving. In rest, we are not less worthy. We are not behind. We are not failing.
You are still useful.
Still whole.
Still enough—even when you move more slowly, even in uncertainty and transition.
The solstice reminds us: this is not the end. It is the turning. The sun pauses—then begins its gradual return. The light shifts direction. Day by day, almost imperceptibly at first, it grows.
Let this be your permission slip:
to pause
to meditate
to invite in ease
to honor both your wins and your losses
to take a sacred breath before the holidays
